Naturally aspirated holdouts

The Porsche 911 GT3RS pairs a naturally aspirated flat six with a level of downforce few road cars ever see. The BMW E92 M3 carries the S65, a naturally aspirated 4.0 liter V8 that revs to 8,400 RPM and remains the last naturally aspirated engine BMW put in an M3. The Audi R8 GT runs a naturally aspirated V10 shared with its Lamborghini Gallardo cousin. And the Lamborghini Murcielago and Aventador SVJ both carry naturally aspirated V12s, among the last of their kind before the industry moved to hybrids and turbos.

The turbocharged generation

The BMW G80 M3 and G82 M4 both run the S58 twin-turbo inline six. The Mercedes-AMG C63 carries Affalterbach's one-man, one-engine build philosophy in a handbuilt V8. The Mercedes-AMG GT R runs a handbuilt M178 twin-turbo V8, suspension tuned specifically for the Nurburgring Nordschleife. And the Audi RS5 and RS7 pair twin-turbo power with quattro all-wheel drive.
