The E92 M3 carries the S65, a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V8 that revs to 8,400 RPM and remains the last naturally aspirated engine BMW ever put in an M3. It traded the inline-six of its predecessors for something closer to a small-block race engine, built to reward a driver who holds it near redline.
